The world we live in is changing more rapidly than any other time in history.  The old familiar adage, “there are two certainties, death and taxes,” forgot to include the biggest certainty of all—change!

Every facet of our lives is undergoing tremendous change, especially in law enforcement communications where at one time the old UHF analog radio was cutting edge technology and a walkie-talkie radio the size of a boom box was a prized possession in any deputies hand. In today’s world, communication science is changing so rapidly that by the time a new system is implemented, it’s already covered in ancient dust.

The season for illegal marijuana grows is upon us. Last year Idaho sheriffs and DEA seized about 100,000 marijuana plants from outdoor grow operations, mainly on U.S. Forest land. This is big business for organized criminal gangs and we believe more groups will target Idaho because of the open land and small population. When traveling in the woods, be aware of your surroundings and if you come across plastic irrigation pipe in the middle of nowhere with thin leafed plants popping up, leave immediately and call your local sheriff's office or Drug Enforcement Agent at 208-334-1620.

Gooding and Jerome County Sheriffs seize 7500 marijuana plants growing in corn fields. August 11th and 12th were busy days for Sheriffs' Gough and McFall and their deputies. They also got some help from the DEA, State Police and some local farmers. This is all part of a state-wide effort financed by the DEA to eradicate marijuana crops from Idaho lands.

How much does it cost to jail a person for a day? The Association will be conducting a survey over the next several weeks and will post the results. Counties can compare their costs with other counties and maybe learn from each other as to what's working and what's not.
